Don't Ask, Don't Tell

This film could be titled "Brooke and Owen, Amy and Ansgar." It is one of the most bizarre foursomes one could imagine!

Brooke Gatwick and Owen Storke are a married couple, and they each have a busy professional life. Brooke is opening a posh New York art gallery while Owen is a popular television newscaster and rising star.

This happy couple should not have the time for a lot of shenanigans. Yet that is precisely what happens when they are led into temptation by two seducers, Amy and Ansgar. Amy hires herself out as a "decoy" and seduces Owen to test his fidelity for Brooke. Simultaneously in Paris, Brooke is apparently seduced by her Irish playboy client Ansgar. In a curious way, the filmmakers made the weird situations and moments seem credible...especially the guilt felt by both Brooke and Owen.

The script for "Trust" was adapted from a stage play, and the dialogue of Kristen Lazarian was smart and sassy. The filmmakers were also successful in opening up a stage play with some glitzy settings in New York and Paris. There was also a creative use of very short flashbacks and scenes that were fast-forwards. The acting was first-rate, especially in the subtext which revealed the characters' essential vulnerability.

"Trust" is a real sleeper that has many fine production values. It also raises questions about where, when, and how to draw the line against temptation. Based on the experiences of Brooke and Owen, the best policy may be: "don't ask, don't tell."
