A girl gets invited by a mysterious stranger to go to a store to get a unicorn. She's wanted one her entire life despite the attempts by her zany parents to normalise her. Sound like a good plot? It's not, but Brie Larson and Samuel L Jackson manage to pull this off and turn it into a sweet lovely film about life and dreams, and love and growing up. I think without Jackson and Larson this would have been a ridiculous film that no-one would like, but they made it work and I now forgive Larson for her searingly bad appearance in Kong.

Plot summary
Kit (Brie Larson) is a lonely twenty-something dreamer who's reluctant to leave the comforts of childhood and fully embrace adulthood. But when art school sends her packing, Kit is forced to move back home with her parents and take a temp job in a boring office. Just when she's resolved to finally put her Care Bears aside and grow up, a mysterious salesman enters Kit's life and offers to give her childlike heart its greatest desire. Unicorn Store is a love letter to everyone's inner child, and a reminder that no dream is impossible.

Zany brilliance
Colorfully Bland
Much in the same vein of 2017's Lady Bird with Greta Gerwig, this movie felt like a semi-autobiographical version of Brie Larson's life. And maybe that's because right off the bat, she uses real life footage of her childhood and the story certainly seems to have a personal touch to it as well. Sadly, the quirky tone and meandering plot don't do a whole lot for the end result, but it can still be enjoyed by even the most cynical folks. I'd like to see more from Brie behind the camera, we already know how good she can be in front of it.

Dream on
What does this movie try to achieve? It tells us that it's ok to dream, it's ok to believe in stuff, whether they are real or not. It also tells us to pursue things and it makes us aware of other things. In the end this still is a movie of course. One with a lot of heart.
And while Brie Larson has been controversial (or at least that is what some thought when she went on promotion for Captain Marvel),this movie is anything but controversial throughout most of its run time. Great actors involved but still it may seem like a story that is easy to see through. There are flaws along the way - you may find them annoying or endearing, depending on your state of mind and mood. But if you let your inner kid out, if you actually get involved into the story, no matter the gender you subscribe yourself to, this will be an uplifting ride that is made out of hope if nothing else
