This is an interesting and enjoyable take on the werewolf myth, although the 'wolves' are unambitiously realised - victims of a low budget perhaps. I applaud the restraint. The alternative would be unconvincing men-in-hairy-suits - although that would have been kinder to the actors than the skimpily dressed marauders we get here.

The acting is mainly convincing - one character reminds me of a skinhead Brian Blessed - and the monsters are seen only briefly, and then in the blur of motion. The costumes very accurately mirror those worn in Roman Britain, where events are placed. The locations are beautiful and very nicely directed by the BAFTA Award-winning Stuart Brennan (who also writes and acts in this).

There are some slight continuity problems with the irregularly present snow so effectively trailed in the various overhead shots, and there are some nods to modern audience expectations that might not sit well with historical purists, but I really enjoyed watching this well made slow burner. 7 out of 10.

A group of 10 Roman Legionaries venture far from the safety of Hadrian's Wall looking for 4 missing messengers who went to see the King of the Picts. We get to know the group through their stiff dialogue. Late into the film we discover there is some sort of "plague." From the opening scene and title we know it is wolf related.

Mithra was the god of Roman soldiers for the most part. The empire was going toward solar deities. The script liked the older classical planetary gods. The "wolves" were a bit anti-climatic.

Guide: No swearing by Jupiter. No sex or nudity. Side breast tease.

Right, well I had expected more from this movie from writers Stuart Brennan and George McCluskey. A lot, lot more.

First I must say that the movie does have a good production quality to it, and they definitely had some nice costumes and props, which were quite nice. The acting in the movie was also quite adequate. But this is where the good things end.

Then let's move on to the less good things - or the bad things. Which was, essentially, the rest of the movie. The storyline was generic and mundane, which was a shame, because it had potential. But director Stuart Brennan didn't make proper use of what was readily available. And the movie was just a whole bunch of showing nothing more than a bunch of English-talking people pretending to be Romans, walking around (mostly in the dark) and being chased by rarely-seen adversaries.

And when you finally did get to see these man-wolves - or werewolves - it was just so anti-climatic that I was good and ready to get up and turn off the movie. Man, talk about being a lousy treat for the audience that stuck with this ordeal of a movie. It was such a slap to the face with a cold, dead fish.

The concept of Roman soldiers being tracked by werewolves actually was interesting, but it was just slaughtered - pardon the pun - at the hands of the director. So much potential thrown straight down the drain.

I am rating "Wolf" a mere three out of ten stars, solely because of the costumes, some fair enough acting performances and the props. The rest of the movie was just not worth the time, money or effort. This is not a movie that I will be watching a second time, nor is it a movie that I will ever recommend anyone to waste their time or money on.
