Wolf Creek once again proves to be a fatal spot for more unsuspecting youths.
I know I shouldn't really compare it to the original, but I need to. It always seemed like such an odd follow up, this came quite some years after the first. Number one is an iconic horror, packed with tension, an edge of the seat horror, I don't get that vibe here, yes it has its moments, but the humour at times really does outweigh the horror.
Mick Taylor is bizarrely now a character that could genuinely be on a pantomime stage, he's terrifying, but it's all tongue in cheek, he's gone from being a sinister, force of horror to an over the top horse riding comical figure. The acting performance is hard to fault, I'm just not sure on the direction of the character.
Nicely made, definitely has some thrills and scares, it's totally over the top, and simply doesn't have the scares or the terror of the first, but it's a fun ride. 6/10.

Be careful who you run into at Wolf Creek.
Mixed-up sequel that's all over the place
The original WOLF CREEK was a low budget, gruelling slice of Outback horror which hasn't been equalled since. This big-budget sequel eschews the original film's grittiness in favour of a wild roller-coaster ride of a movie, packed with action and grisly special effects. It's a film which sees pig killer Mick Taylor transformed into a wisecracking Hollywood-style horror villain a la Freddy Krueger.
Unfortunately, WOLF CREEK 2 isn't a patch on the first film as it constantly veers all over the place tonally. It starts off on a strong footing with a fantastic opening sequence that re-introduces Taylor as an antihero, but after this point it goes down a very dark and explicit road indeed. At its best, WOLF CREEK 2 comes off as a hybrid between the stark nastiness of I SAW THE DEVIL mixed with THE HITCHER, but at its worst it's just another torture porn wannabe and it certainly doesn't bring anything new to the screens.
The mid section of the film is pretty decent but I found that it got worse and worse as it went on, leading to a lengthy and ever so slightly boring climax which fails to breathe new life into the tried-and-bloodied torture-film staples. The pitch-black humour works rather well, however. John Jarratt is good value as ever, but his mannerisms are so frequent here that they become cartoonish in the extreme. It's a shame that the resultant film is so unworkable.
IT'S DENNIS LILLY!
Our killer/slasher Mick is back doing what he does best. The victims come into the film and lack any decent introduction. They are there simply to get killed, forget about and type of character or plot.
Mick is good to watch or listen to, but other than that the film was at best a mediocre slasher...except for maybe that head shot.
Parental Guide: F-bomb. No sex or nudity. Mick gropes victim.
