Coast Guard Rear Admiral Frank Beardsley (Dennis Quaid) returns to his hometown of New London to run the Coast Guard Academy. He's a widower and runs a tight ship with his 8 kids. While on a date, he runs into his childhood sweetheart artist Helen White-North (Rene Russo) who has 10 children and on a date of her own. She's also a widower and adopted 6 of her kids. They reconnect, quickly marries and move into the big lighthouse from their past. Frank brings along his housekeeper Mrs. Munion (Linda Hunt). The kids don't get along and decide to join forces to split up the couple.
There are just so many kids. There are so many of them that most remain nameless unknown figures to me. The two oldest girls have a good side story but that's rare. The older kids have some more things to do but the kids become a blob mass. I like the general outline of the movie. It doesn't have much comedy that works but the story is a little heart warming. That is until the last act when I lose all interest in the movie. The whole movie is so predictable on auto pilot and I didn't care so much about the individual characters.

Plot summary
Admiral Frank Beardsley returns to New London to run the Coast Guard Academy, his last stop before a probable promotion to head the Guard. A widower with eight children, he runs a loving but tight ship with charts and salutes. The children long for a permanent home. Helen North is a widowed free spirit handbag designer whose ten children live in loving chaos, with occasional group hugs. She and Frank, who were high school sweethearts, reconnect at a reunion, and it's love at first re-sighting. They marry on the spot. Then the problems start as the two sets of children, the free spirits, and the disciplined preppies must live together. The warring factions agree to work together to end the marriage.

WAY too many kids
Not Having a Ball
Widow Dennis Quaid (as Frank Beardsley) meets widower Rene Russo (as Helen North) just before their high school reunion. Eighteen children and twenty-five years ago, they were sweethearts. They instantly marry, robbing this "Yours, Mine and Ours" (1968) re-make of the sweet and funny courtship scenes played by Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda.
Filmmakers update it by making six of Ms. Russo's children adopted (different ethnicities). An update might be interesting if some of the Beardsley-North children hooked up. But they dislike each other, have water fights, and spill paint. They plot to break-up their happily married parents. The family's pet pig gives Mr. Quaid a wet kiss. It's that funny.

One big happy family ...easier said than done.
Admiral Frank Beardsley(Dennis Quaid) is a widower with 8 children and his family is 'ship shape' running like a Swiss watch. Helen North(Rene Russo)is a widowed handbag designer with 10 kids and believes in individual self expression. Frank and Helen end up going to their class reunion and discover the love they once had is still there. Thus sparked the proposal of marriage before notifying their separate broods. The thought of one big happy family is not a number one hit with the chaotic 18 'siblings'...sabatoging the union of their 'high school sweethearts' parents becomes a collective mission.
This comedy is not really funny; albeit some of the sight gags are humorous. Juvienile situations and the smiling Quaid and Russo seemed wasted on me. Also in the cast are: Linda Hunt, Jerry O'Connell, David Koechner and Rip Torn.
