Zombie Beavers!

I was taken by surprise how entertaining and pleasing this schlock horror comedy film was. Its got good production values, good script and passable acting with three lead actresses who possibly all could be the girls next door. Well at least they are pleasing enough to the eye without being caked up in heavy makeup or plastic surgery.

The film has all the tropes of a horror film and tips a knowing wink of the eye to the audience and delivers chills, blood and humour.

Three nubile college students have a weekend away at a cabin by the river in a small town and men are off the agenda as one of them has a broken heart because her boyfriend cheated on her.

The river some time ago had an accidental spillage of some experimental chemicals in drums which fell out from a truck carrying them. It seems the beavers in the river have been affected by it and mutated.

In the cabin the girls have been joined by their boyfriends, even the ex turns up leading to a lot of drink and wild sex but then the beavers attack and these beavers will not lie down even after you kill them.

The writers and director certainly know how to construct a horror film and keep the comedy going, at times painfully so when one of the men gets a blow job from hell. The beavers when they turn zombie just about look bad enough to keep within its B movie roots, in due course the film enters the zombie genre and becomes a chase film.

Zombeavers is a cheesy title but if you enjoyed movies like the original Fright Night or Re-Animator then it deserves your time.

The title pretty much says it all.

With a title like "Zombeavers", you can pretty much assume you're not going to be watching a film for the "Masterpiece Theatre" crowd. As far as the film goes, it's pretty much what you'd expect from the title- -a dopey film with lots of crude humor, some boobs and not much else!

The film begins with three young ladies going off in the woods for a little vacation. Like so many films these days, the girls seem to have nothing in common. One is an annoying and crude and enjoys taking her clothes off, one is bland and the other seems prudish and thoughtful--just the sorts of folks you cannot imagine actually being friends. Soon their boyfriends show up and that's when the zombie beavers begin attacking. Inexplicably, the six don't immediately leave but hang about to presumably become dinner for these feisty creatures.

What follows is basically a "Halloween" or "Friday the 13th" sort of film but instead of human attackers, there are rather silly beaver puppets. Given its title, it also abounds with crude, sophomoric humor---with jokes about rape, beavers and a close-up of a dog taking a leak. Clearly this is not an intellectually taxing film and the jokes seemed terribly unfunny at times! It's crude and a bit stupid...but at least it doesn't take itself seriously and it's pretty much the sort of film the audience would expect. The acting and direction are okay. The disappointment for me was the writing. With a concept like zombie beavers, I expected more laughs. I actually expected the film to be more of a comedy, perhaps like the wonderful spoof "Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil". While I was far from bowled over by the film, I really was impressed by the opening titles. They were very imaginative and well done, though unfortunately what follows didn't maintain the same level of cleverness.

Moronic comedy horror

A typically moronic comedy horror flick, ZOMBEAVERS is squarely aimed at the beer-and-pizza crowd looking for laughs, gore, and flesh. The pinnacle of this genre is PIRANHA 3D, a film I adore, but ZOMBEAVERS is far from the quality of that production. It's saddled with simplistic scripting, annoyingly vapid characters (Rex Linn's hunter excluded),primitive puppet effects, and a generally generic tone. Early on the story seems inspired by 'The Raft' segment of CREEPSHOW 2, although the latter moves to a cabin for EVIL DEAD-inspired scares. Topless actresses and really poor gore effects are the order of the day here, but it's all entirely perfunctory and not very amusing.
