And boy is it funny, because it's true. But it's also sad because it's true.
Its got an idiot president, idiot media, idiot citizens and some very few smart people that must fell like they ended up in the planet of the apes. Its really accurate, scary accurate.

Plot summary
Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence),an astronomy grad student, and her professor Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) make an astounding discovery of a comet orbiting within the solar system. The problem - it's on a direct collision course with Earth. The other problem? No one really seems to care. Turns out warning mankind about a planet-killer the size of Mount Everest is an inconvenient fact to navigate. With the help of Dr. Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan),Kate and Randall embark on a media tour that takes them from the office of an indifferent President Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her sycophantic son and Chief of Staff, Jason (Jonah Hill),to the airwaves of The Daily Rip, an upbeat morning show hosted by Brie (Cate Blanchett) and Jack (Tyler Perry). With only six months until the comet makes impact, managing the 24-hour news cycle and gaining the attention of the social media obsessed public before it's too late proves shockingly comical - what will it take to get the world to just look up?.

Someone made a meme movie out of the US
A really good movie, yet painful to watch
I understand why some people hate this film. It feels real in its entirety, it shows you how stupid and insignificant we are and it is extremely apropos today. Also, it was marketed as a comedy, when in fact is a dramatic film that is humorous only in its accurate portrayal of humanity. Then again some people try to "tell you" what it is about and, while it is certainly metaphoric, it isn't about anything more specific than ourselves. It is a mirror. Some people don't like what they see in it.
I found it an almost perfect film, with some deliciously carefully crafted moments and great acting. At first I thought the comedic side was actually too much and wished that someone like Steven Soderbergh made the movie instead, but as I was watching it I started to appreciate how methodical the approach was and now I believe Adam McKay was the right man for the job. I enjoyed the overall plot, I liked the characters and how things were presented, but I loved the little things like, for example, the only scene where Europe is mentioned, as a short scene of a news item when they say they are going to convene and find their own solution, resulting in absolutely nothing. I am European and sad to say it struck home. Or the meal scene at the end, which is both emotional, focusing and reminding us how even that option can be taken away by something as small as a virus.
Annoyingly, in these days movies from the U. S. are becoming more and more of "a color". They are not telling a story, but are taking a side. They are either democrat or republican, conservative or liberal, blue or red, flyover or coast. Don't Look Up is not a big offender, but the language and presentation was clearly on the "coast" side. Thus, it will be probably appreciated by people who already saw the world this way and ignored or at best maligned by the people on the other side. And it's a pity, because this film is meant to bring us together as a civilization and not keep us divided. I feel like it could have done a better job in that direction.
There was one detail that I think McKay got completely wrong. There is no chance in hell the president of the United States would make a public speech and use metric units like kilometers in it. If it weren't for that, I would have rated this 10 stars. Jokes aside, this is a movie you have to watch.
Don't Look Up
The movie starts with a Bob Monkhouse joke. 90% of the global audience would be wondering who he is.
Bob would have approved of opportunity knocking. He was the first person to introduce a young Jim Carrey to a British television audience.
Directed by Adam McKay who won an Oscar for his screenplay for The Big Short.
This is a satire in the same vein. Astronomer and PhD student Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) discovers a new comet. Her professor Dr Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) calculates that the comet is headed for Earth.
It will cause an extinction level impact in about six months. They try to warn President Orlean (Meryl Streep) but is kept waiting. She is more concerned about the appointment of a new Supreme court judge which has caused a scandal.
Kate and Dr Mindy later attempt to get a sceptical media interested but they are more captivated by the love life of a pop star.
Later any attempt to deflect the comet to a safe orbit is hijacked by an IT entrepreneur who believes that the comet could be mined for its valuable resources.
By the end Kate and Dr Mindy are accused of scaremongering. President Orlean starts a campaign telling people to Don't Look Up. Later the comet becomes visible in the sky and it could be too late to save the planet.
As a satire it is not as sharp or funny as the BBC series The Thick of It or the movie spin off, In the Loop.
What saves it and this is something the writers factored in. The real life events of the last few years. The Covid pandemic. President Trump and his alt right agenda of fake news. The fawning conservative media and his anti vax acolytes in the American public.
The rest of the world are not that far behind. If the movie came out know, they could had added that the impact of dirty Russian money which has fueled the alt right.
With an all star cast that boasts five Oscar winners. The movie gets near its aims but misses bullseye on too many occasions.
McKay was aiming for Dr Strangelove but it becomes self indulgent at times but its still worth looking up.
