I did wonder about the title when I heard about it, then I heard it was loosely based on the classic film Guss Who's Coming to Dinner, so I was certainly interested to see it, from director Kevin Rodney Sullivan (Barbershop 2: Back in Business). Basically Percy Jones (Bernie Mac) and wife Marilyn (Judith Scott) are planning to renew their wedding vows, and at the same time their daughter Theresa (Avatar's Zoë Saldaña) is planning to bring home her boyfriend Simon Green (Ashton Kutcher). The parents had no idea that Theresa's boyfriend was white, and they certainly didn't know that they planned to tell them of their engagement plans during the weekend. The race issue complicates situations between Simon and his to-be father in law, Percy doesn't trust him, so much so that he looks into his past history, and he finds out he lost his job recently. He never told Theresa, and she is upset with both Simon for lying to her and her father for doing what he did, and so is Marilyn, both are ditched and have to come together to work things out. In the end. all relationships are restored, and the final scenes see Percy and Marilyn happily marrying again, and Simon and Theresa happy and looking forward to their future together. Also starring Hal Williams as Howard Jones, Kellee Stewart as Keisha Jones, Robert Curtis Brown as Dante and RonReaco Lee as Reggie. You could argue that this is pretty much a remake of the classic Spencer Tracy/Katharine Hepburn/Sidney Poitier film, just swapping the races round, but there are some big differences, like a more competitive rivalry between the black father and white guy, such as the racing scene, but that doesn't mean it is better, the original is obviously much more poignant, and this attempt to make it more funny doesn't quite work, but it is a romantic comedy worth a go once I suppose. Okay!

In New York, the Afro-American Theresa Jones (Zoë Saldaña) goes to the suburb of New Jersey with her Caucasian boy-friend Simon Green (Ashton Kutcher) for the renewal of the vows of her parents after twenty-five years marriage. Her father, the racist banker Percy Jones (Bernie Mac),does not accept the white Simon and does not give a break to Simon. In the end, love is beautiful, and all the family problems are fixed.

Although having the theme "visiting the family", which is very explored in comedies by Hollywood, the beginning of "Guess Who" is funny, with many hilarious racist situations. I laughed a lot, for example, with the confusion of Percy with the cab driver in the arrival of Simon to his house; or with the stupid dialogs of Simon with Percy, making the situations worse and worse. There are some jokes at the grandfather's dinner table that I did not understand (for example, the joke with the "ho" sister). Bernie Mac is simply perfect in the role of a very racist black man, and Aston Kutcher is very good in the role of an impulsive young guy that does not think before speaking. Indeed his character is too much silly to be a good and disputed professional in business. Unfortunately, in a certain moment the story become boring and corny, certainly for commercial interests in order to have a politically correct conclusion. My vote is six.

Title (Brazil): "A Família da Noiva" ("The Family of the Bride")

Percy Jones (Bernie Mac) is a successful black man in New Jersey. He's having a big 25th marriage anniversary party for his wife. His daughter Theresa Jones (Zoe Saldana) is bringing her boyfriend Simon Green (Ashton Kutcher) home for the first time. Percy is shocked that Simon is a white boy and Theresa never mentioned it. It doesn't help that he had just quit his job without even telling Theresa.

It's not easy to make a broad comedic remake of a sincere racial politics Hollywood ground-breaker. First, I don't like Simon. I get that he's the quintessential bumbling good guy but his stupid actions get infuriating. Also I don't like the obvious attempt to switch the prototypes. Percy is the successful guy. Simon comes from the broken home. The race card gets waved in our faces and it gets tiresome. It's trying to be funny which doesn't work since I don't like him. It can't be profound by its very nature. The movie starts with a deficit and non of it makes it better.
