One of the most heartwarming, feel-good movies. It's so good because of the positive spirit in the movie. It's also one of the most underrated movies. Teaches you a lot of life-lessons. Commendable direction. The film ends with a beautiful message. A must watch for drama fans.

Plot summary
Thirteen year-old city brat Ben (Brandon Tyler Russell) has done it again, and his struggling, single mother (Mira Sorvino) has had enough of him getting into mischief. Now, Ben has to choose between going down the path of juvenile hall, or spending the summer in Iowa on a farm with his estranged grandfather, Jack (Peter Fonda). The day after arriving, Ben is ready to leave. To help Ben get a friend, Jack gets him a smart farm dog from an animal shelter to keep Ben company and in line. Between the dog and a friendly neighbor (Louis Gossett, Jr.),Ben soon learns life lessons about friendship, family, and responsibility. It may take a village to raise a child, but when you only have a handful of people and a dog at your side, you have to make do with what you have. Through it all, Ben has the most memorable summer of his life.

One of the most heartwarming, yet underrated feel-good movies
Even the dog couldn't save the film.
Even though I am not big fan of dogs but the only good thing in this movie was the Dog.
a really decent unforgotten film to watch
"Smitty" is a very decent drama/coming of age/family movie that your family would want to watch maybe once considered this has some bullying issues, vandalism issues, a scene where a man (played by Louis Gossett Jr) dies from a heatstroke and a scene where the dog nearly dies from being hit a by a truck at end. Plus David Mickey Evans (the Sandlot) does a decent good job directing this film and the child acting (with Brandon Tyler Russell) looks fair enough and Peter Fonda definitely is brilliant as the grandfather.
So if your a dog lover, I recommend seeing it once since there are some scenes that would traumatize children for years to come.
