The cover/poster for this 2021 horror movie titled "Shookum Hills" (aka "The Devil Below") was initially what drew me into watching the movie from writers Eric Scherbarth and Stefan Jaworski. And I will say that the movie's synopsis was also sounding interesting enough. So I opted to sit down and watch this horror movie, as I hadn't already seen it, and I am a sucker for horror movies after all.
Well, you have to venture more than 45 minutes into the ordeal that is "Shookum Hills" before the movie starts to pick up its pace, and by that time it was just too little, too late. Director Bradley Parker lost my attention well before that, given the insanely slow pacing of the narrative and the total absence of anything interesting or scary leading up to that point.
The movie failed to entertain me, and I gave up on it 53 minutes into the boredom that is known as "Shookum Hills". Talk about a swing and a miss of a horror movie. "Shookum Hills" brought nothing new to the subgenre of horror movie that involves carnivorous subterranean creatures that other movies before it haven't already brought to the genre, and often done much better than what "Shookum Hills" did.
The acting performances in "Shookum Hills" were so-so. I was initially thrilled when I saw that Will Patton was on the cast list, because he usually is really good in movies. But hey, everyone delivers a dud every now and again, "Shookum Hills" was one such instance. Aside from Will Patton, then I wasn't familiar with a single actor or actress in the movie.
"Shookum Hills" is a boring movie, and the total absence of anything even remotely scary makes this a very monotonous, nay, boring movie experience. I was sorely disappointed with the material writers Eric Scherbarth and Stefan Jaworski delivered.
My rating of "Shookum Hills" lands on a three out of ten stars. You might not want to waste your time, money or effort on this particular swing and a miss of a horror movie.

Ya don't wanna venture here...
Terrific.
The Devil Below is a tad thin overall, but engaging and thrilling.
This rating's low, I watch a lot of films and the majority aren't half as good as this. Similar to the recent "Doom: Annihilation," though an upgrade in quality. Alicia Sanz a decent lead, however the characters could have been a bit better.
Cut the Rope
Arianne (Alicia Sanz ) guides a group of geologists to the Shookum Hills mine in Kentucky. The mine was abandoned decades ago and the town perished in a fire, no longer on maps. The area is guarded with an electrified fence and danger signs.
I like the tough character of Arianna. This is another "mole men" variation. I liked the fact they made a reference to the Siberian dig. As always, I am confused how large underground predators survive with no prey and why would have to turn off lights so they can't spot you. Would seem they would be blind. Other than the main plot holes, it was a watchable film.
Guide: F-word. No se or nudity.
