Nice Film

Burt Reynolds plays a version of himself (he even interacts with his old movies) and the film delivers not only huge laughs but also has an emotional center that at times make you hate then love the main character in the span of a few seconds.

In this film an older actor is invited to a film festival to pick up his life achievement award. This prompts him to do some serious soul searching. Along the way he realizes how lucky he was and most of see the errors of his life.

Well worth seeing.

This hurts...

Burt Reynolds is a great actor. He took a few departures for the money during his career, but he's still one great actor. Watching this thing hurt, because I'm in my mid-60's. This is coming... 5 years, 10 years, 15 years... I dunno, but it's coming. And Burt pulled this off beautifully which is something most of us couldn't do at his age. I'm glad I watched it and I hate that I watched it.

After the bandit

Writer-Director Adam Rifkin wrote this movie especially for Burt Reynolds and it really could not work without him. There are scenes where the older Reynolds is placed into his previous films as he talks to his younger and cockier self in Smokey and the Bandit and Deliverance.

There is no doubt that Reynolds was a strong actor when he got the right material and a director who could reign him in. In the 1970s he was the top rated movie star for five years in a row.

Reynolds plays Vic Edwards, a once legendary movie star now old, his star faded and the money has gone.

Edwards is given a lifetime achievement award by the Nashville film festival, only to find that it is a cheap event run by some film nerds. Edwards is put in a cheap motel, the films are shown in a bar and he is driven around by Lil, the foul mouthed sister of the event's organiser who is always arguing with her boyfriend on the phone.

After being dismissive of the organisers and his fans. Vic gets Lil to drive him to his nearby hometown of Knoxville. Edwards revisits his childhood home and even his first wife in a nursing home. He reflects on his life and career as he fights ill health, being forgotten by a new generation of movie goers.

The Last Movie Star is a bittersweet comedy. The plot about Lil and her no good boyfriend is lame. The story about a variant of Burt Reynolds, that hits home. It is even more poignant after his death. Reynolds has other films that will be released even after he is gone, but this is his last major outing.
