Joel (Paul Rudd) and Molly (Amy Poehler) are out to diner with Karen (Ellie Kemper) and Kyle (Bill Hader). Joel and Molly tells them the story of their love as the corniest of rom-coms. Joel is an executive of a retail candy mega corporation and dating the cold Tiffany (Cobie Smulders). Molly runs her tiny candy store. They first meet at their friends' Halloween party both as Ben Franklins leading to their friend commenting "They came together."
The spoofing of rom-coms is something fun and mostly insightful. I love the basketball friends. Ken Marino is great in that. However, I wish it goes more overboard and takes greater risks. For example, I love the grandmother love. It's hilarious and highly inappropriate. David Wain got a lot of great comedic talents in this. It's just not quite edgy enough. It's all done with a smile and a wink. It has a couple of funny moments but not enough of them.

Plot summary
In New York City, couple Joel and Molly are having dinner with their couple friends, Kyle and Karen. In the general discussion of their respective relationships and how they met, Joel and Molly, in telling their story, say that it is exactly like a corny romantic comedy. The story they end up telling not only has every romantic comedy cliché thrown in, but it is told in the style of a romantic comedy, complete with crazy characters who should be smarter to figure out a smoother path to a happy ending for Joel and Molly. But that one romantic comedy element that is the big payoff may not be reality, or perhaps it is.

BAGELS ARE A METAPHOR FOR THE CIRCLE OF LIFE
There is a plot synopsis on the back of the DVD cover, so it is hard to spoil the plot, which wasn't important. Raul Rudd plays Robert Hays in this spoof of Romantic comedies. There were lines which made me chuckle while there were boring predictable scenes like the one in the bar which was pointless and seemed endless. The scene with his grandmother could have been left out. Its crudeness lacked humor, especially since they did a similar scene just before that.
The dialogue was bad by design, especially the end speech by Rudd, which in reality would have never worked. While the film has hit and miss humor, it is no "Airplane" which was an iconic film.
I liked how they tried to work in metaphors which are overly used, especially in Indie films. I was amused by the film, had some chuckle out loud moments, and had some scenes making me look for the remote. No belly laughs.
Worth renting for a laugh.
Parental Guidance: F-bomb, comedy sex, no nudity.
Satirical Brilliance
A small business owner (Amy Poehler) is about to lose her shop to a major corporate development.
This film seems to get a bad rap, with people saying it is not a good satire or parody. I respectfully, and strongly, disagree. So many movie conventions are turned on their head. Obviously, the traditional romantic comedy blueprint, but even more than that. And some moments had me laughing out loud (literally).
Although "Wet Hot American Summer" is considered a modern classic by some, I think "They Came Together" is the superior film. It's more mature, more consistent. Maybe it will take a few years, but I see this becoming a cult film.
